◤FIFA World Cup in Qatar◢ Mexico Football Association confirmed Sevilla

The Mexican Football Association confirmed in a statement on its official website on Tuesday that the country's Sevilla winger Jesús Corona will not be playing with Mexico's national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after failing to recover from a fractured fibula in time.

In an official statement, the Mexican Football Association said: "The Football Association, together with the head coach of the men's national football team, Gerardo Martino, has informed Jesús Manuel Corona that the player will not be included in Mexico's 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar call-up list plans.

"This decision was made because the player has not completed the rehabilitation process after being injured in August this year. The national team will continue to monitor the progress of his injury and hope that Jesús can return to the action with a speedy recovery."

In fact, Martino said as early as September that he would not impulsively make a decision on the final Mexico 26-man squad list, but was willing to wait and give Corona, who might be able to catch up and return from injury, an opportunity to be selected at the last-minute.

Meanwhile, in addition to Corona, the Mexican Football Association also said authorities had not yet decided on whether to call up Wolverhampton Wanderers centre forward Raúl Jiménez, who has returned to the country to rehabilitate with a hamstring injury or not.

They added that Martino is willing to wait until November 14, a week before the World Cup kicks off, depending on the progress of Jiménez's injury recovery before deciding whether to call up the player.

The 29-year-old Corona suffered a fractured fibula in the La Liga opener against Osasuna for his club Sevilla in August, and was later diagnosed to be out for five months. He never played again during the season following the injury.

Corona, who only transferred from Portuguese Primeira Liga defending champions Porto to Sevilla during the winter transfer window last season, has so far played 23 times for the club in all competitions after joining, scoring 2 goals and assisting 4 times.

Mexico will have a pre-tournament friendly with Sweden next week (November 16), after which they will fully prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, hoping to compete with Poland, Argentina and Saudi Arabia to qualify to the next round from the Group C group stage games.
