A number of Manchester City fans were arrested by Greater Manchester Police following disturbing fan unrest and violent incidents against Liverpool fans following their Carabao Cup match..

Sky Sports quoted Greater Manchester Police sources on Saturday and reported that the police have formally launched investigations into multiple fan unrest and violent incidents that occurred during the Carabao Cup 4th knockout round match between Manchester City and Liverpool last night.

According to the Greater Manchester Police, the police have arrested a number of Manchester City fans involved in the game after the game and temporarily detained them to assist in the investigation of the multiple unrest and violent incidents involved, including a 53-year-old male fan who was suspected of beating an opposing fan .

Greater Manchester Police's official match commander, Superintendent Gareth Parkin, said in a statement: "Greater Manchester Police are aware that a number of objects, including coins and smoke grenades, were thrown during the match.

"We will be investigating the events and reviewing CCTV footage from that evening. Clearly, throwing objects in a confined area is dangerous and can have serious and sometimes devastating consequences. "

In addition, the police also added that two male fans were arrested for bringing flammable explosives into the stadium; a male fan was also arrested for expressing racially discriminatory behaviour in public.

At the same time, the police also received a report that a 15-year-old female Liverpool fan who went to the stadium to watch the match in a wheelchair innocently suffered head injuries after being bullied by opposing fans.

Following the Greater Manchester Police's statement, Manchester City and Liverpool issued a joint statement condemning the fans and reiterating that the incidents were "totally unacceptable" and "very disappointing".

Manchester City and Liverpool said in a joint statement: "Liverpool Football Club, Manchester City Football Club and our chairman of the supporters' group have worked together in recent weeks to remind fans of our expectations and both teams would like to thank the vast majority of fans for their supportive performances in the Carabao Cup match at the Etihad Stadium last nignt."

“However, it is very disappointing that some totally unacceptable incidents took place during last night’s game. These incidents will be fully investigated and a police report has been made and the individuals found to be responsible will be sanctioned by their respective clubs."

"Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC are fully committed to working together to remove these issues from our fixtures. They have no place in football."

The matchup between Manchester City and Liverpool has been plagued by a series of bad fan unrests recently. Just last October, when the two Premier League giants met at Anfield, Liverpool condemned the Cityzens' fans for chanting direspectful slogans to the deceased and their families during the 1-minute silence tribute to the 97 Reds fans who unfortunately died in the Hillsborough Disaster, as well as leaving graffiti everywhere around the stadium.
