All charges against Manchester United striker Greenwood now dropped as key witness withdraws

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has dropped all charges against Mason Greenwood after key witnesses withdrew.

"The withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material means that there is no prospect of conviction in this case," a CPS spokesman said in a statement.

"Under the circumstances, it is our duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties."

In January last year, Greenwood's girlfriend Harriet Robertson posted a video of her mouth bleeding on social media, several photos of multiple bruises on her body and a voice recording, accusing the Manchester United striker of violence against her. Greenwood was later arrested by Greater Manchester Police and faced multiple charges including "attempted rape", "personal assault" and "coercive control".

Due to multiple crimes, Greenwood was suspended from training by Manchester United , and many sponsors, including Nike and EA Sports, also terminated their partnership with him. Greenwood is currently registered with Manchester United U21.

Manchester United's statement

In response to Greenwood's charges being dropped, Manchester United issued a statement on Thursday saying: "Manchester United takes note of the Crown Prosecution Service's decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood."

"The club will initiate an internal process before determining the next steps. We will not be making any further comment until that process is complete."

It is understood Greenwood will not return to training or competition during the process.
