Attending Court, Sepp Blatter Denies Bribery to Michel Platini
6/17/2022, 19:10BELLINZONA - Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has denied bribing former UEFA chairman Michel Platini over allegations of corruption between the two men.
"I knew when we started with Michel Platini it wasn't a total and we'll see," Blatter told the court in Bellinzona , Switzerland.
The Swiss Attorney General's Office (OAG) claims a payment of 1.6 million pounds, or around Rp. The 30 billion that Blatter did to the former president of UEFA Platini was unlawful.
The money was awarded to French national team legend Platini by FIFA with Blatter's approval in 2011 for work completed a decade earlier.
Meanwhile Blatter added that he and Platini publicly shook hands after the bribe transaction.
"It was an agreement between two sportsmen. I find no fault with it," continued Blatter.
The 86-year-old said he asked Platini to be his adviser when he was first appointed president of world football's governing body in 1998.
He said former Les Blues captain Platini wanted 1 million Swiss francs a year but Blatter told him FIFA could not afford the fee.
Instead, they paid 300,000 Swiss francs a year, the total to be paid at a later date.
The case saw Blatter end his 17-year reign as FIFA's number one. Also, this is one of 25 investigations by the prosecutor's office into corruption in football.
Platini himself quit working for FIFA in 2002 but did not ask for a fee until 2010. The former Juventus player told the court he did not need the money at the time of his departure.
However, Platini later heard that two former employees had received large payments and approached FIFA, who he said told him to send invoices. The three-time Ballon d'Or winner did so in January 2011, with the money paid 10 days later after Blatter's approval.
The trial will conclude on June 22, with a verdict expected on July 8. If found guilty, the defendants could be jailed for up to five years plus a fine.
