Benfica completes contract extension with World Cup-winning Argentina international center-back Nicolás Otamendi..





Benfica announced on the official website on Friday that the club has extened the contract of the team's World Cup-winning Argentina international center-back Nicolás Otamendi.


According to Benfica's official statement, Otamendi has signed on a short-term two-year deal with the club which only runs until the summer of 2025.


After completing his renewal procedures, in a shout-out to fans through the Benfica official website, Otamendi said: "Benfica fans, I will be with you until 2025, let us continue the dream together, let's go!"


The 35-year-old Otamendi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on February 18, 1988. He is 1.83 meters tall and plays as a central defender.


Otamendi joined the Vélez Sarsfield youth academy when he was 7 years old, and completed his first-team debut in May 2008.


With his outstanding performances, Otamendi led his club to win the Argentine Primera División in 2009 and was selected as one of the South American Players of the Year.


At the end of August 2010, Otamendi joined Porto for €8 million.


During the 4-year spell with the Dragões, Otamendi led his team to win 3 Portuguese Primeira Liga, 3 Portuguese Super Cups, 1 Taça da Portugal and 1 Europa League.


On the deadline day of the 2014 winter transfer window, Otamendi moved to Valencia for 12 million, but he was immediately loaned-out to Atlético Mineiro after joining the club.


After returning to the club after his loan ended in July of the same year, Otamendi immediately established himself as a key player in the club's first-team. His good performances also allowed him to be selected into the La Liga Team of the Year.


At the end of August 2015, Otamendi joined Manchester City for £32 million.


During the 5-year stint at the Cityzens, Otamendi led his club to win 4 Carabao Cups, 2 Premier League, 2 English Community Shields and 1 FA Cup.


At the end of September 2020, Otamendi moved to Benfica for 15 million.


This season, Otamendi played a total of 46 times for As Águias in all competitions, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist, leading the club to win the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
