JAKARTA -- Rafael Benitez got off to the perfect start as Everton manager when his team came from behind to beat Southampton at Goodison Park on Saturday (14/8).

As Goodison welcomed back the fans for the first time since 1 March 2020, the former Liverpool boss received a warm welcome before kick-off which resulted in a positive start.

However, the mood soon changed when Saints debutant Adam Armstrong, who joined from Blackburn earlier this week, scored the opener. He took advantage of the ball Che Adams to curl into the top corner.

Everton struggled for the remainder of the first half but Benitez's decision to put Richarlison in front paid off soon after the break as he scored from debutant Andros Townsend's header.

Benitez's side, without James Rodriguez, then drove the fans crazy with two goals in the space of five minutes. First Abdoulaye Doucoure then Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

"Thanks to the fans for the support for me and for the team. This is an important situation this year with the fans behind us - I think it will be important for us," said Benitez quoted from Tribal Football, Saturday (14/8).

"We know it's a start and we have to improve, but we are very happy with the reaction of the team and the support of the fans," he said.
