Boca Juniors players clash with security guards

Boca Junior players disappointed their goal was disallowed and eliminated from the Copa Libertadores.

BELO HORIZONTE -- Boca Juniors were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores by Atletico Mineiro, after losing on penalties, Wednesday (21/7). However, both teams are likely to be sanctioned, after chaos during and after the match at Stadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Brazilian police were seen spraying angry Boca players on their dressing room door after the game. Video footage on Argentine and Brazilian websites shows the players choking while shouting harsh words at security guards. Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo was even caught on camera hitting one of the security officers.

The players clashed in the stadium tunnel after VAR disallowed Boca's two goals. Players believe the goals are valid. The last 16 match at the Mineirao stadium ended 0-0 and Atletico went through on penalties 3-1.

The first leg in Buenos Aires last week also ended goalless, which also saw Boca having a goal ruled out for offside after lengthy VAR checks.

"Without a doubt, everyone can see that. We scored a good goal, and the fact is that we deserved to win the first game too. It hurts, we feel bad. CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) needs to see the referee," said Boca midfielder Diego Gonzalez quoted from Skysports, Thursday (22/7).

Anger overflowed during the second half when the referee checked the disallowed goal on the VAR monitor on the touchline. Brazilian officials clashed with Boca players who approached the referee, and assistant coaches from both sides were sent off.

Atletico goalkeeper Everson was the hero, saving two Boca penalties and then scoring the decisive spot-kick to take them into the quarter-finals. (Eko Supriyadi)
