Brentford striker Ivan Toney charged by FA over betting

The Football Association (FA) issued a statement on Wednesday, formally charging 26-year-old Brentford striker Ivan Toney with betting as many as 232 times.

It is said that Tony's violations occurred between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021, and seriously violated the FA's gaming regulations. He has been given until Thursday, November 24 to respond to the FA's allegations.

Subsequent impact

The British media have pointed out that once the FA's allegations are established, Ivan Toney may be sentenced to a long-term suspension, which will deal a huge blow to Brentford: so far this season, Toni has scored 10 goals in 16 appearances, second only to Haaland's 18 goals and Kane's 12 goals.

The Daily Telegraph cited Joey Barton, Kieran Trippier and Daniel Sturridge as examples of how Ivan Toney might face punishment. Among them, the situation of Barton and Tony is the most similar: In 2017, Joey Barton was accused by the Football Association of making 1,260 bets in 10 years, and was finally sentenced to an 18-month suspension.

Brentford's response

In response to the FA's statement, Brentford's official response said: "Brentford Football Club has been informed that Ivan Toney has been charged with breaching FA Regulation E8. The club has spoken to Ivan and his legal representatives regarding the matter. Discussions will take place and the conversation will continue privately."

"We will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete."
