Chelsea is one step away from getting Marc Cucurella
2022-08-03 01:34JAKARTA - Chelsea are closing in on a £50m deal to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton after Manchester City ended their interest in the Spanish defender, citing the Independent, Tuesday (2/8/2022).
City refused to live up to Brighton's assessment, which left the door open for Chelsea to hold talks.
It is understood that Cucurella is open to joining Chelsea, despite having been interested in a move to City, and that Brighton have already started looking for a potential replacement.
Contracts were being exchanged yesterday with a view to finalizing a deal. City are not expected to make a new offer, having decided not to bid more than £40m.
Although Chelsea already have a £50m left-back in Ben Chilwell, and Barcelona targets Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmeiri are still at the club, Cucurella is seen as a potential solution to some of their defensive problems.
Thomas Tuchel wants to add another left-footed defender and believes more power is needed in the wing-back area.
Chelsea have missed defensive targets Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake and most recently Jules Kunde, who joined Barcelona.
However, they have already spent £34m on Kalidou Koulibaly and are interested in Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
Leicester City remain adamant they will not sell Chelsea target Wesley Fofana unless they accept an offer of £80m or more. However, sources believe Fofana would be interested in a move to Chelsea.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig are interested in taking back Timo Werner on loan, while Billy Gilmour is likely to leave on loan for another season.
Gilmour spent last season at Norwich and hopes to return to Chelsea to compete for a first-team spot. But he was relegated to the Under-23s during the US pre-season tour.
Everton manager Frank Lampard is a huge Gilmour fan and could offer the midfielder a place in his squad for this season.
