Dolores Aveiro: Cristiano Ronaldo not ruled out to return to Sporting Lisbon next year

Cristiano Ronaldo's future has been up in the air since the beginning of the summer. The Manchester United star's mother, Dolores Aveiro, said on the sidelines of an event in Lisbon on Tuesday that his son could still return to Sporting Lisbon.

Possibility of Cristiano joining Sporting Lisbon

"It could happen, but not now. Not this year, maybe next year," Dolores said of her son's return to Sporting Lisbon. "He'll be back this year or next, God bless."

Cristiano Ronaldo started his career with Sporting Lisbon, and talk of his return to his home club have been rumored over the years. This summer, Cristiano Ronaldo's name was once linked to Sporting Lisbon, but this transfer was abandoned after the strong opposition of coach Amorim.

Perhaps considering the above possibilities, Dolores later said that even if her son cannot join Sporting Lisbon, her eldest grandson Cristiano Jr. may still fulfill her wishes. "If Ronaldo doesn't come, his son Cristiano Jr. will come back," she said.

Cristiano Jr. is 12 years old and currently plays as a striker. Dolores added: "Cristiano Ronaldo already has a successor. If the wishes of a mother and grandmother come true, Cristiano Jr. will join Sporting Lisbon in the not too distant future."

Cristiano's career

As for Cristiano Ronaldo's career, Dolores unreservedly supported her son's decision: "He intends to continue playing until he is 40, it has to be."

Dolores' remarks were undoubtedly an echo of Cristiano Ronaldo. At 10 p.m. Portuguese time on Tuesday, September 20, Cristiano made it clear at the 2022 "Quinas de Ouro" awards ceremony that he expected to fight until the 2024 European Cup. If the Manchester United star's imagination comes true, he will be 39 years old at the next European Cup.
