In the 2022/23 season, the top 16 of the EFL Cup started. Newcastle and Bournemouth, who were playing at home, staged a Premier League civil war. In the end, Newcastle defeated Bournemouth 1-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

It is worth mentioning that many players in the starting lineups of the two sides returned from the World Cup. Bournemouth has two Welsh internationals, defender Mephim and midfielder Moore.

At the beginning of the campaign, Newcastle took the lead in organizing an offensive opportunity. Trippier took a free kick in the 12th minute but it went over the post. In the 26th minute, Wilson scored in the melee, but the side referee signaled a foul first, so the goal was invalidated.

Leicester, Wolves and Southampton also advance to quarter-finals

In the 66th minute of the second half, Bournemouth made a huge mistake. Defender Adam Smith accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal when facing a pass from a Newcastle player, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead.
