Elche sign Pape Cheikh on a contract until the end of the season

Elche announced on Tuesday that it has signed Pape Cheikh until the end of the season.

"Cheikh is a midfielder with top-flight experience combined with great physicality and talent on the ball. He is ready to help the team achieve its goals," Elche said in a statement.

"Welcome, Pape!"

The 25-year-old Pape Cheikh is from Senegal and mainly plays as a defensive midfielder. He made his debut at Celta Vigo in December 2015 and moved to Lyon in August 2017. Restricted by playing time, Cheikh was loaned to Celta Vigo and Dijon for a short period of time between 2019 and 2021.

In July 2022, Cheikh left Lyon due to the expiration of his contract and went to Greece to join Ares FC. However, he only played 14 times for Ares FC, and then terminated his contract early. Cheikh has been training with the Elche first team since last week.

For Elche, the arrival of Pape Cheikh will come in time to fill the void left by Omar Mascarell's accumulation of yellow cards. Coach Pablo Machin said in this regard, "We are surprised by his unemployed situation and good physical level. I hope Pape stays. There are not many options to find a player in the midfielder position."

"We asked him to join because we were interested in him because he could make a difference on the pitch. We believe that Pape is a player who can help us in the midfielder position," Machin added afterwards.
