LIVERPOOL - Everton have completed the signing of ex-Newcastle forward Salomón Rondón on deadline day.

The Venezuelan 31-year-old, who played under Toffees boss Rafa Benitez at the Magpies and Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional, has joined on a free transfer and has signed a two-year deal at Goodison Park.

Rondón said: 'Defending the colours of a club with a history as rich as Everton's fills me with pride.'

'I can't wait to pull on the shirt and be reunited with Rafa Benítez, a coach who has changed the way I understand the game. I'm really grateful for the faith he's shown in me.'

Benitez sees the 31-year-old as back-up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and trusts the frontman given their previous relationship.

Indeed, Newcastle’s refusal to sign Rondón on a permanent deal played a part in the Spaniard quitting St James’ Park in 2019.

Rondón had scored 12 times during a loan spell from West Brom in the 2018-19 season and became a fan favourite on Tyneside.

Rondón spent the second half of last season on loan with CSKA Moscow, scoring four goals in 10 games as well as providing two assists.

Reports earlier this month suggested Rondón's contract with Dalian Professional could be terminated due to financial issues at the Chinese club.
