Former Ligue 1 Lille winger Araujo leaves MLS to return to Brazil

The 26-year-old forward Luis Araujo , who played for Lille in Ligue 1, will part ways with Atlanta United this summer and join Flamengo to return to the Brazilian League.

After playing for Lille for 4 seasons, Araujo will switch to Atlanta United in 2021 and set foot in the American Professional League. During these three seasons, he played a total of 57 games for Atlanta United, including 51 starts, contributing 11 goals and 12 assists.

This season, the Brazilian winger has scored 3 goals and 1 assist in 13 games, including the goal he helped the team beat the Colorado Rapids 4-0 yesterday. The 3-game losing streak was terminated.

However, the former Lille winger's performance after joining Atlanta United did not meet expectations, and at the same time he did not play a big role in the lineup. Therefore, Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta United's vice president and technical director, recently revealed that he has been with the team. Flamengo reached an agreement to sell Araujo to Flamengo, allowing him to return to his country to play for the team.

Bocanegra also said that the team will actively seek reinforcements during the transfer window this summer to strengthen Atlanta United's fourth place in the MLS East this season.

Bocanegra's statement also mentioned that this transfer agreement is an opportunity suitable for both parties, allowing the team enough time to plan and evaluate the team's future prospects. According to reports, Atlanta United will receive a transfer fee of US$10 million from the agreement to sell Araujo.
