Iraqi player banned for two years for 'attempting to attack referee'


Baghdad Air Sports Club midfielder Ibrahim Bish has been suspended for two years for attempting to attack a referee after being sent off during a match on Sunday, the Iraqi Football Federation said .


Baghdad Air Sports Club dropped to second place in the league after losing 3-2 to Al Qaraba after a late goal .

" When Ibrahim Bish jeered at the referee when he was shown a second yellow card and then a red card, as a result the player ran towards the referee and tried to attack him, he threatened and insulted the referee, " the Iraqi Football Federation said in a statement on Wednesday.

The federation added that Hammadi Ahmed, a member of the club's administrative committee, had also been banned for two years after shoving the referee and making " harsh and obscene remarks " towards the refereeing staff.

The Air Force Sports Club in Baghdad will have to play three home games without fans and was fined 10 million Iraqi dinars ( $ 7,637.79 ) after fans rioted after the games.

The club will also have to pay for repairs to the Al Shabaab stadium which was damaged in the riots.
