MANCHESTER — Manchester United surprisingly lost to Wolves 1-0 at Old Trafford. This defeat immediately raises the question of whether anything has changed since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked?

That question does seem ridiculous if you look back at Ralf Rangnick's unbeaten start. Four wins from five matches and had moved up to fifth place.

United were able to come from behind to beat Arsenal. After that Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley became three of the five teams United have faced since Rangnick joined United. Crystal Palace also tasted defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Rangnick quickly earned plaudits after that winning streak.

But the warning alarm has gone off. United performed very poorly, throughout the game, especially at home. Wolves were able to grab their first win at Old Trafford, having not done so in 42 years.

United have also failed to score in four different home games in the Premier League this season. More than they did throughout the 2020/21 season.

United fullback Luke Shaw has even publicly questioned the motivations of his team-mates in six league games. This defeat made United fail to approach Arsenal in fifth place, having previously been defeated by Manchester City. So that until now stuck in seventh place, under Tottenham Hotspur who have one game in hand compared to MU.

"We need to bring intensity and more motivation. In the dressing room, we know what we want. But off the pitch, we have to give 100 per cent."

"To win a game like this, we all have to be 100 per cent committed. It's difficult and disappointing," said Shaw, quoted from Skysports, Tuesday (4/1/2022).

With world-class players they have, continued Shaw, United should be able to appear more pressing and attacking. However, against Wolves, Shaw assessed that MU did not seem to want to chase the ball and press from the first minute. Cristiano Ronaldo cs judged to make Wolves feel comfortable playing at home.

''We feel like we are in trouble. You look at the players we have. We have great quality. But sometimes the quality is not enough,''he said.

Former Mu and Wolves midfielder Paul Ince has seen a lot of gaps in Rangnick's squad since against Norwich and Newcastle. What Antonio Conte did to Tottenham in a short time, is considered better than what Rangnick gave to Manchester United.

Although inhabited by star players, United's squad does not yet have strong belief. ''They have no faith in each other. They play as individual burdens,''said Ince.

But Ince was not the only one who saw MU players appear disappointing. Rangnick also considered that his team did not perform well, either individually or collectively.

The big problem his team faced when they lost to Wolves was to get their opponents as far from the box as possible. MU even continued to be beaten by the guest in the first half.

Despite making changes in the second half and controlling the game, it was also not enough to score goals and conceded. “Therefore, we are very disappointed with the result. But also about part of our performance,''explained Rangnick.

So, is that OK, Rangnick?
