Klopp urges Liverpool to be aware of threats from Benfica striker Darwin Nunez
4/6/2022, 06:32MERSEYSIDE -- Liverpool tactician Jurgen Klopp hopes his team can silence and secure victory during their visit to Benfica headquarters in the first leg of the 2021/2022 Champions League quarter-finals at the Estadio da Luz, Wednesday (6/4/2022) early morning hrs. Klopp highlighted the progress of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who has performed well with the Eagles in the last two seasons.
As a result, Klopp warned his troops in order to reduce the action of the Uruguayan striker.
"He's a very good striker, the next star striker from Uruguay. He's a top boy," Klopp said, quoted by Sportskeeda , Tuesday (5/4/2022).
As is known Benfica qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2021/2022 Champions League after getting rid of the Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam. Nelson Verissimo's side managed to win 3-2 on aggregate in a two-legged match.
Meanwhile, Liverpool qualified for the quarter-finals after getting rid of Italian club Inter Milan with a 2-1 aggregate.
On paper the Merseyside are clearly the favourites, but Benfica have proven the ability to beat the elite on the road in this year's Champions League competition.
The main reason behind Benfica's outstanding form this season is Nunez's outstanding form up front. The 22-year-old forward has scored four goals in eight Champions League games, including the winner in the second leg against Ajax.
Overall, Nunez has scored 27 goals in just 34 games across all competitions.
As a result, Klopp asked Virgil van Dijk and his teammates to be aware of Nunez's movements in the match in Portugal later. Even so, Liverpool's focus is not only on the striker. "We have to try hard so that he can't get a lot of ball supplies. We hope this can go smoothly," continued the German coach.
Klopp will be hoping his squad are in top form from the start to seal victory in the first leg ahead of the return clash at Anfield on April 13, 2022.
It should be noted that four days later after the match in Portugal, Liverpool had to visit Manchester City's headquarters in a life-or-death match for the Premier League title this season.
