Laporta confirms Gavi extends contract with Barcelona
6/19/2022, 08:02BARCELONA - Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that his club are very close to reaching a long-term contract agreement with Gavi. The news also broke rumors of the player's departure.
"We are optimistic because we want Gavi to stay at Barcelona. We are very happy that he is staying, because he is from our academy," Joan Laporta confirmed to Marca, quoted from Sportsmole , Sunday (12/6/2022).
The 17-year-old made 47 appearances in all competitions at club level during the 2021/2022 season. He contributed two goals and six assists.
Gavi's contract with the Catalan club expires in June and there has been a lot of speculation surrounding his future over the last few months. Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all said to be ready to shell out big money to land Gavi to England.
But after new talks between Joan Laporta and Gavi's agent Ivan de la Pena, the number one at Camp Nou, said the two were very close to making an announcement about a new deal. De la Pena also happens to be a former Barcelona player.
"The player and his agent, who we know, also want to stay at Barcelona. We are very close to reaching an agreement," said Laporta.
Gavi will later sign a contract until June 2027, which will include a substantial release clause.
Pedri's injury problems have opened the door for Gavi to become a key player in Xavi Hernandez's squad. He is now expected to extend his stay with the club that has made his name.
