Gavi, who was only 17 years old, was attracted by a number of clubs, including Liverpool.

JAKARTA - Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes the Catalan giants will agree to a contract extension with Gavi next month. The Blaugrana are aiming to retain their star man this summer as Xavi prepares to chase the La Liga title in 2022/23.

Laporta has backed the coach by starting contract extension talks with several key players. Barcelona management managed to convince Uruguay international Ronald Araujo to continue his future with Barcelona.

The 23-year-old has a new release clause of 1 billion euros incorporated into the deal which runs until 2026 in an announcement confirmed at Camp Nou on Friday (29/4/2022).

Following the positive news about Araujo, Laporta was urged on about Gavi's future. His current contract expires in 2023, amid growing transfer interest from Liverpool.

"We hope to provide good news soon," said Laporta, according to Mundo Deportivo's report, quoted by Football Espana.

Gavi seems to be an important part of Xavi's team next season. He broke into the first team in 2021 when Ronald Koeman was still a coach. Gavi set a record as the youngest Spain international in October, two months after his 17th birthday.
