Leeds United to pay Augustin £24.5m for breach of contract

Premier League club Leeds United have been ordered to pay £24.5million to ex-player Kevin Augustin after they were found in breach of contract.

In January 2020, Leeds United signed Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig. At that time, Leeds United was still in the British Championship, and their contract stated that if Leeds United was successfully promoted to the Premier League this season, they were obliged to buy out Augustin at a price of 18 million pounds.

However, Augustin only played 3 games as a substitute for Leeds United, a total of 48 minutes, and did not score any points for the team. Then Leeds United sent Augustin back to RB Leipzig on the grounds that he was inappropriate. However, this season, Leeds United did rise to the Premier League, but they did not buy Augustin.

In December 2022, Leeds United had reached a consensus with RB Leipzig because of this incident. Leeds United settled the dispute with 15.5 million pounds, but they did not expect to pay a greater price now.

Augustin, who is now playing for the Basel club in Switzerland, personally appealed the matter to FIFA , accusing Leeds United of breaking the contract at the time, and FIFA was in his favor to a certain extent.

It is understood that Leeds United must pay Augustin compensation of 80,000 pounds a week for 5 years, a total of 24.5 million pounds. A spokesman for Leeds United said: "The club cannot comment on ongoing legal matters."

After Augustin ended his loan contract with Leeds United, he joined Nantes and spent 2 seasons there. Then join Basel as a free agent in the summer of 2022. At present, he has played 18 matches for Basel and scored 4 goals. The contract with Basel will expire in 2025.
