Man Utd still have room to improve in order to restore former glory, says Ten Haag

Eric ten Haag is hoping to bring back the glory days to Manchester United but the Premier League club has a long way to go, the Dutch coach said ahead of the FA Cup final against local rivals Manchester City.

The 12 -time FA Cup winners beat Brighton and Hove Albion on penalties in the semi-finals as they look to lift their second trophy of the season after winning the League Cup in February .

The former Ajax boss took charge last year and overcame a shaky start to end their six-year trophy drought.

Victory in the FA Cup will complete an impressive debut season for the Dutchman at Old Trafford after leading his side to a third-placed finish and qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Three-time European champions Manchester United failed to qualify for the Champions League last season.

" I look at our opponents but we look at ourselves and you have to look at where you are as a club and from there, you have to improve and I think we did that last season," Ten Haag told reporters in Ahead of Manchester City on Saturday.

" We're heading in a good direction and we have the opportunity to set new goals in the summer, new goals in the short term.

" In the long run, they will remain the same. I said last year that we want to rebuild Manchester United, but we have a long way to go. "

City won their fifth league title in six seasons and will be boosted by the chance of sporting immortality in their pursuit of the treble.

But Ten Haag said their focus was on winning trophies rather than preventing City from emulating Manchester United's historic treble feat in 1999 .

" We want to win the cup, it's not about stopping them, it's about winning the cup. We have a good chance, " Ten Hag said.

Ten Hag added that Brazil winger Anthony, who left the field injured in the 4-1 win over Chelsea, still " has a chance, but is unlikely to play " .

France striker Anthony Martial has been ruled out with a hamstring strain, but Ten Hager said he was focused on winning with " available players " .
