Martin Dúbravka voluntarily recalled by Newcastle United after failing to gain game time while on-loan at Manchester United..
2023-01-02 11:28Newcastle United announced on their official website on Sunday that the club has recalled Slovakia international goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka from his loan-spell with Manchester United.
According to the news reported by The Athletic's renowned English Newcastle United correspondent, in fact, it was Dúbravka himself who asked Manchester United to terminate the loan agreement. Likewise, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe also agreed that instead of letting him rot on the bench for a long time, it would be better for him to play more games as the main goalkeeper, hence the club has agreed to recall Dúbravka.
After Dúbravka's recall by Newcastle United was confirmed, Manchester United did not forget to post a message on their official website to thank the Slovakian player for his past time with the club and wish him all the best in the future.
With Dúbravka returning to his parent club, Manchester United also confirmed that Tom Heaton and young Nathan Bishop will serve as David de Gea's backup goalkeepers.
On the other hand, Newcastle United has confirmed that Dúbravka will compete with Nick Pope for the main goalkeeper position after returning to the club. This move is also regarded as a sign that Loris Karius, whose contract is about expire would leave the club.
Dúbravka, who will be 34 years old in two weeks, was born in Žilina, Slovakia on January 15, 1989. He is 1.9 meters tall. He joined the youth academy of his hometown club Žilina when he was young, and in 2009 completed his Žilina first-team debut in July. During his 5 years in Žilina, Dúbravka won 2 Slovak Super Liga titles and 1 Slovak Super Cup with the club.
After that, Dúbravka moved to the Danish Superliga to join Esbjerg at the end of January 2014, and then joined Slovan Liberec at the end of July 2016.
With his good performances, Dúbravka joined Czech First League giants Sparta Prague as a free agent in July 2017. Soon he attracted the attention of many large clubs because of his good performances in the league.
On the deadline day of the winter transfer window in January 2018, Dúbravka joined Newcastle United on a loan-with-an-option-to-buy basis. As soon as he joined, he had kept clean sheets many times in a row, and he was immediately praised by many fans, pundits and the media.
In May 2018, Dúbravka was officially bought out by Newcastle United for £5 million. His performances became better and better, and became one of the biggest contributors to the Magpie's success in their relegation battle before the club was acquired by the Saudi Arabian Sovereign Wealth Fund Consortium. He also won the Thailand King's Cup Invitational with the Slovakia national team in 2018.
In addition, he was also voted by the famous football magazine 4-4-2 in May 2019 as the fourth best goalkeeper among active players in the Premier League after Ederson, Alisson and De Gea.
On the deadline day of this summer's transfer window, Dúbravka joined Manchester United on a loan-with-an-option-to-buy basis, but since joining, he has only played in two League Cup matches for the Red Devils.
Since joining Newcastle United, Dúbravka has played 130 times in all competitions on behalf for the new mega-wealthy club who is flying high in the Premier League, conceding 175 goals and keeping clean sheets 37 times.
