JAKARTA - Lionel Messi has surpassed Brazilian legend Pele's goalscoring record after scoring two goals for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against Club Brugged in the last match of the Champions League Group AL at the Parc des Princes, Paris Wednesday (8/12) early morning WIB. The Argentine superstar scored the third and fourth goals for Mauricio Pochettino's side to a 4-1 win.

His first goal of the night was Messi's 757th career goal, a figure which saw him match Pele's official career tally of goals. He then scored a second-half penalty to take it to 758.

This means that PSG are now advancing as the second highest goalscorer of all time, trailing Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored 801 goals in his career.

Ronaldo scored his 800th and 801st goals against Arsenal last week. That means he has scored 686 goals in a club career plus his 115 goals at international level for Portugal.

The 36-year-old has scored 450 goals, a club high for Real Madrid, 130 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus and five for Sporting Lisbon.

Messi scored a club record 672 goals for Barcelona.

The 34-year-old star has also added six goals in 14 appearances for PSG, in addition to his 80 for Argentina.

The number of goals scored by Pele of all time is still a matter of dispute. Because, he and his former club Santos refuse to admit that Ronaldo has surpassed his goal collection at the start of this year.

A statement from Santos in January criticized the opinion of some analysts who ignored the 448 goals scored in friendlies, when facing weaker opponents, such as small or regional teams.

"Still, the match was played in the official uniform, with the official rules of the game and with the score sheet," Santos said in a statement.

Pele co-signed this statement and updated his Instagram biography which lists his all-time goal record of 1,283, including those he scored for Santos, Brazil and the New York Cosmos in the United States.
