Mexico midfielder Guardado retires from international football


Real Betis players announced on Tuesday that Mexican midfielder Andres Guardado has retired from the national team after a 16 - year international career.


The 36- year-old, who made his international debut in 2005 , has played in five World Cups and is Mexico's most capped player with 181 caps.

Guardado wrote on Instagram : " Thanks for everything I've been through these 16 years, words can't express how grateful and honored I am .

" A heartfelt thank you to my teammates, to all the staff who make a big difference in their day-to-day work, and of course to all the loyal fans who have been with me over the years ... I am now one of you! "

The last time Guardado played for Mexico was the 0-2 loss to Argentina in the World Cup group stage last year, and he was also the captain for the last time.

The Guadalajara native is in his sixth season with La Liga side Betis and has played in Europe since joining Spain's Deportivo in 2007 . He also played for Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven.
