Neymar faces calls for 5-year prison sentence over fraud and corruption charges during his transfer to Barcelona from Santos..
10/16/2022, 07:24Paris Saint-Germain's Brazil international forward Neymar could be fined €195 million and face a 5-year prison sentence after being charged of fraud and corruption in the fees of his transfer from Santos to Barcelona in 2013, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday.
According to the report, the allegation was brought forward by a Brazilian investment agency called DIS. The agency recently filed a complaint against Neymar in a Barcelona court.
DIS alleges in the lawsuit that Neymar had a contract dispute when he moved from Santos to Barcelona. DIS owns 40% of the player's image rights before Neymar's move to the La Liga giants.
The group sued the two former Barcelona presidents, Sandro Rosell, Josep Bartomeu, Neymar and his family, as well as the relevant personnel of Neymar’s boyhood club Campeonato Brasileiro Série A side Santos, for concealing the actual amount of the fees of Neymar's transfer to Barcelona, causing the group to suffer huge losses. As the prosecution, they also demanded that the defendants pay a fine of €195million and demand that Neymar be sentenced to 5 years in prison with no statute of limitations.
Subsequently, ESPN made a follow-up report saying that the Barcelona court had informed Neymar that he must appear in court on Monday, but it is not known whether Neymar will be required to attend the hearings for the next two weeks in a row. In addition, Neymar himself, his parents, Rosell, and Bartomeu will all testify in court next Friday.
Regarding the allegations, Neymar's family lawyer, Baker McKenzie, has since criticized and said that Neymar's transfer did not violate any FIFA regulations, and that such a transfer in Brazil was reasonable. In addition, McKenzie also questioned that since the plaintiff and that the incident all happened and based in Brazil, how did a Spanish court has the jurisdiction to intervene and review the case.
It is worth mentioning that this is the third criminal lawsuit stemmed after Neymar transferred to Barcelona. In December 2013, Rosell was accused by his opposing Barça presidency candidate Jordi Cases of having embezzled €40million euros of public funds without authorization in Neymar's transfer saga. At that time, Rosell himself denied the relevant allegations and refused to disclose the whereabouts of the funds on the grounds of commercial confidentiality. In June 2014, Rosell was named by a local Spanish court as a tax fraud suspect in the Neymar transfer saga.
The 30-year-old Neymar is the core player of the Brazilian national team and a big-name star of Paris Saint-Germain.
This season, he has represented the defending Ligue 1 champions in 14 appearances in various competitions, scoring 9 goals and 8 assists. If convicted, the star who is aiming to lead the Seleção to win the World Cup again in Qatar in December this year will have his future totally ruined.
