Roma and Italy legendary former player Daniele De Rossi appointed as Serie B side S.P.A.L.

Serie B side S.P.A.L. has appointed former Roma and Italy legend Daniele De Rossi as its new head coach, the club announced on their official website on Tuesday.

According to S.P.A.L.'s official statement, De Rossi has signed a short-term two year contract which runs until the summer of 2024. At the same time, he, who was originally an assistant coach of the Italian senior national team, has also resigned from all positions in the Azzuri prior to taking up the role.

The uncompromising soul figure on the field

De Rossi, 39, was a defensive midfielder in his playing career. He joined Roma's youth academy since he was young and made his debut in 2001.

During the period, he played a total of 616 times in all competitions for the Serie A powerhouse, scoring 63 goals and assisting 60 times, winning 2 Coppa Italia and 1 Italian Super Cup. He is also the player with the second most appearance maker after another of the club's legend Francesco Totti.

On July 26, 2019, De Rossi left Italy for the only time in his career and joined Boca Juniors as a free agent. However, due to homesickness, he only played 7 times in all competitions for the Argentine giants, scoring only 1 goal. De Rossi chose to retire for family reasons not long after. Despite this, he still won 1 Argentine Primera División title with the club.

Internationally, De Rossi began to represent the Italian senior national team in 2004, during which he played 117 times for the Azzuri in all competitions, scoring 21 goals and making 5 assists.

As the highlight of his playing career, De Rossi won the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany with the team, and also won the bronze medal in the Athens Olympic men's football event with the Italian U21s national team in 2004.

Champions aura is not lost even off-the-field

After retiring in January 2020, De Rossi joined the coaching staff of the Italian senior national team head coach Roberto Mancini in January 2021, during which he also served as the technical director of the Italian U15s and U20s youth national teams. In addition, last summer, as an assistant coach, De Rossi also became the 2020 UEFA EUROs winner with the team.

It is worth mentioning that since Fabio Cannavaro, Filippo Inzaghi and Fabio Grosso are also currently coaching in the same league as De Rossi, plus Gianluigi Buffon, who is still active as a player, Serie B has become the most star-studded league glittered with the most Italy's 2006 FIFA World Cup winners!
