Sampdoria reportedly planning to appoint Inter Milan legend Dejan Stanković as new head coach..

Former Inter Milan legendary midfielder Dejan Stanković is close to being appointed as Sampdoria's new head coach, according to Fabrizio Romano, the renowned Italian transfer journalist on Tuesday.

Romano revealed that Stanković is expected to fly to Italy on Wednesday to meet with Sampdoria executives and sign a contract. He is expected to be officially announced as the club's new head coach by Thursday night. Once completed, this will also be the first time that Stanković had return to Serie A after 7 years.

Pride of Serbia

The 44-year-old Stanković, who served as an assistant coach for Udinese in the 2014/15 season after his retirement, chose to spend a long time with his family instead of coaching after leaving the club.

At the end of December 2019, Stanković accepted the offer to return to Serbia to become the coach of Red Star Belgrade.

During the period, Stanković led his club to 3 Serbian SuperLiga titles and 2 Serbian Cup titles. However, after the club lost to Maccabi Haifa in the play-offs in August this year and missed the Champions League group stage, Stanković chose to resign.

Refusal of Mr. "Dilly Ding, Dilly Dong"

It is worth mentioning that Romano also added that before approaching Stanković, Sampdoria executives also asked former Leicester City head coach Claudio Ranieri, but Ranieri said he has no intention of returning to coach I Blucerchiati again.

Sampdoria lost 3-0 at home to newly promoted Monza in the league at the weekend, leaving the club firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, as such Marco Giampaolo, who had previously hold the post twice was eventually sacked.
