Scottish Premier League to start using VAR technology

The Scottish Football Association ( SFA ) said on Wednesday that the Scottish Premier League will start using VAR technology this month.

The first game to use VAR will be Hibernian against St Johnstone on October 21, and all 12 Premier League club stadiums will have the technology installed.

VAR will also be used in the semi-finals and finals of the Scottish Cup and Carabao Cup.

Positioning of VAR Technology

VAR exists to improve the accuracy of refereeing decisions, and while experience in other leagues has shown that implementation is not easy, we are all committed to assisting the Scottish FA to help it as quickly as possible over the next few months. With additional referees reviewing clear and obvious errors, it is ultimately about giving officials more support and ensuring that any clear and obvious errors are corrected.

The SFA system will be the same system used by FIFA, football's world governing body, based on the principle "minimum disruption, maximum benefit". In addition, the baseline for scrutiny stipulated by FIFA is limited to penalties, red cards, goals scored and any misidentification.
