Soccer news: Canadian soccer team looks to lay foundation with World Cup appearances

Canada have a seemingly small task in Qatar to improve their final World Cup appearance and score.

They featured once in the 1986 final, when they lost to France, Hungary and the Soviet Union in the group stage and failed to net.

Canada's return to the World Cup itself should be seen as a success, a sign that the North American hockey powerhouse is no longer an outsider when it comes to men's football.

Led by Bayern Munich 's leading player Alfonso Davies, Canada is the first CONCACAF country to book a place in the 2022 final . But despite their progress, a knockout stage performance in Qatar may be out of reach.

Although they have come a long way since their humiliating defeat in 1986 , Canada will face second-placed Belgium in Group F , an ageing but still impressive side , who will also take on 2018 Finalists Croatia and Morocco, who are unbeaten in the African qualifiers.

Manager John Hedman said the Qatar World Cup was an opportunity to lay the groundwork for the 2026 World Cup, which Canada will host alongside the United States and Mexico.

For many of these people, this will be their first experience . And this World Cup is for their country to enjoy it .

They face Japan in their final warm-up match in Dubai on November 17 and Belgium in their World Cup opener six days later .
