South Africa wins the Women's Africa Cup of Nations for the first time
2022-08-06 06:40JAKARTA -- South African striker Hildah Magaia scored twice as her team won the first Women's Africa Cup of Nations title. South Africa beat hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final Saturday (23/7/2022) local time.
Magaia's two goals came in the space of eight minutes after scoring from close range in the 63rd minute and creating his second in the 71st minute from the same position.
South Africa's waning concentration saw him lose possession as Morocco pulled one back in the 80th minute through England-born striker Rosella Ayane. The match, which took place before the eyes of the Moroccan crowd in Rabat, was tense until it had to be played with nine added minutes.
Reported by Reuters , Sunday (24/7/2022), this is South Africa's first title after being runner-up five times, including the last edition in 2018. Morocco is playing its first final and will accompany South Africa to next year's Women's World Cup together with the two semifinalists were eliminated, Nigeria and Zambia.
The Women's Africa Cup of Nations is the tournament that determines Africa's qualification for the Women's World Cup being held in Australia and New Zealand.
