Ter Stegen Reveals Barcelona Squad Wants De Jong To Stay
2022-08-02 15:35CATALUNYA -- Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has stepped down to comment on the issues surrounding Frenkie de Jong's future. Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for De Jong during this summer's transfer window.
The Red Devils made De Jong's name a priority to be brought in after Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata left.
De Jong is considered the ideal player to lead United's midfield next season. But the deal is very complicated.
Although MU and Barcelona are both willing to reach an agreement, De Jong's reluctance to leave Camp Nou has prevented United from securing his signature. Until now the future of the Dutch international is uncertain. The Blaugrana actually wanted De Jong to leave to stabilize the club's finances.
Ter Stegen assesses all players clearly want the best for the team. And De Jong is a footballer who offers quality. Therefore, De Jong will have a positive impact on the club he is defending.
"We want him to stay, but I'm not involved, that's up to the club ," he said.
Now Chelsea emerged as Manchester United's competitors to get De Jong's signature. They seem more serious and sacrificing than the Red Devils. Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are reportedly ready to be shared with De Jong.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta praised the ability of Alonso and Azpilicueta. But he declined to comment further on the potential trade-off.
"They are under contract at Chelsea and we respect this and the new owners. I don't want to talk about players coming from other teams," Laporta said in New York.
He admitted to commenting on both of them only as footballers. He thinks Alonso and Azpilicueta are very good players. They showed their quality and talent while at Chelsea.
"But I don't want to talk about it out of respect for Chelsea."
