'This is a historic moment' - Ferrieri Caputi will be Serie A's first female referee

Ferrieri Caputi, 31, will be the first female referee to officiate in Serie A. According to the official confirmation from the Italian Referees Association (AIA), she will be in charge of officiating Sassuolo's match against Salernitana in the seventh round of the league at 3 pm this Sunday.

"This is a historic moment," AIA president Alfredo Trentalange told reporters on the scene at a news conference, "Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will make his debut in Serie A This is the first time a woman has appeared in the top Italian league. Thanks to Gianluca Rocchi and the committee for their efforts, and to everyone who believes in her.”

"Similar to FIFA's call to host the U17 Women's World Cup in India, our introduction of female law enforcement in Serie A opens up an absolutely epoch-making possibility."

Ferrieri Caputi's refereeing career began in 2007, in charge of the Italian provincial and territorial leagues. In 2015, Caputi began to referee the Italian League and has officiated a total of 92 games. From 2020 to 2022, she will be responsible for 37 matches in all competitions, including 22 Serie C, 3 Serie B and 2 Coppa Italia.
