Timo Werner Breaks the Fast for Goals, Chelsea is Steady in the Big 4
5/2/2021, 06:13 JAKARTA - Timo Werner breaks his fast in the Premier League to strengthen Chelsea's position in the top four of the standings. Chelsea beat West Ham United 1-0 in Week 33 at the Olympic Stadium, London, Sunday (24/4) WIB.
Werner scored his goal two minutes from half-time, after being well positioned to cheat Ben Chilwell's lure from the left side of the box. It was Werner's sixth Premier League goal. He last scored on February 15 when he helped Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
If you look at the record for away goals, Werner has been on a goal fast for nearly six months, after the last time the German striker scored at Burnley on 31 October last year.
Werner actually had a good chance of scoring his second goal of the game in the 54th minute, but his shot on Mason Mount's vomiting ball that escaped Lukasz Fabianski's arms turned off target.
Chelsea's task of maintaining the advantage over West Ham was made easier because West Ham player Fabian Balbuena was rewarded with a red card by referee Chris Kavanagh in the 81st minute. The red card was awarded by Kavanagh after nearly three minutes of consulting with VAR and scanning the sidelines of the pitch to review reruns of the incident Balbuena's offense against Chilwell.
The victory this time makes Chelsea firmly dominate fourth place in the standings with a collection of 58 points, three points ahead of West Ham who are just below it.
In the next match, Chelsea will host Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (1/5) next week, two days before West Ham visit Turf Moor to face Burnley. However, Chelsea will first fly to Spain to play the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday (27/4).
