Unclear with Azpilicueta, Barca Prepare Alternative Players

Azpilicueta can still make a maximum contribution to Chelsea

BARCELONA - The decision not to extend Dani Alves' contract has resulted in the lack of player options in the right-back position of the Barcelona first team.

Barca coach, Xavi Hernandez, only has Serginho Dest and Sergi Roberto as options for players on the right side of defense.

In order to increase the options of players in the right-back position, Barcelona is reportedly targeting Chelsea veteran right-back, Cesar Azpilicueta.

Barcelona hope to take advantage of the Spanish full-back's contractual situation with Chelsea, which only has one year remaining.

Azpilicueta opened up the opportunity to leave the Blues after 10 years with the West London club.

However, Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel, is openly reluctant to give his blessing regarding Azpilicueta's departure to the Blaugrana.

In addition to being disappointed with the approach taken by Barcelona to the Blues captain, Tuchel also assessed that Azpilicueta could still make a maximum contribution to the Blues next season.

The management of the Blues also seems to be following the wishes of the German coach.

Barcelona seems to be aware of the increasingly slim opportunities to bring in the Spanish right-back.

To that end, the Blaugrana management has prepared a backup plan or alternative players if it fails to bring in Azpilicueta in this summer's transfer window.

“Barcelona are starting to open up to the possibility of signing Celta Vigo right-back Hugo Mallo. The Catalan club sees Mallo as an alternative player if it fails to bring in Azpilicueta,'' wrote the Fichajes report, Monday (25/7).

Like Azpilicueta, Mallo is a veteran right-back from Spain. The 31-year-old right-back started his professional career with Celta Vigo.

Mallo was promoted to the Celta first team in 2009. Since then, Mallo has become the main choice in guarding the right side of the Celta Vigo defense.

The success of bringing the Galician club to promotion to La Liga at the end of the 2011/2012 season was Mallo's best achievement.

In total, Mallo has played in 421 matches in all competitions, including 283 appearances on the La Liga stage. The collector of 12 goals and 27 assists for Celta has also been trusted as the captain of the Celta Vigo first team since 2018.

With 10 years of experience grazing in La Liga, Mallo is considered not to have difficulty adapting if recruited by Barcelona.
