Verona coach Cioffi sacked due to poor team record

The loss against Salernitana was the final straw for Gabriele Cioffi. Serie A club Verona announced on Tuesday that it had sacked Cioffi as head coach.

"The club is grateful to Mr. Cioffi and his staff for everything they have done," Verona said in a statement.

Gabriele Cioffi, 47, was at Udinese before coaching Verona. In June 2022, Cioffi succeeded Igor Tudor as Verona coach, with a contract signed until 2024. Igor Tudor is currently the head coach of Marseille.

The poor record is the main reason for Cioffi's dismissal. After 9 rounds of Serie A, Verona only recorded 1 win, 2 draws, 6 losses, and 5 points, and currently ranks 18th in the standings.

It is reported that the 48-year-old Uruguay coach Diego Lopez will be the successor to Cioffi, who worked with Verona's current sporting director Francesco Marocu during his spells at Cagliari and Brescia.

No matter what, the new coach must solve the right debate after Verona lost a large number of main players, and is committed to leading the team to avoid relegation: this summer window, Antonin Barak, Caprari, Giovanni Simeone, Zaccagni, Udogie, and many other main players have left one after another, causing the team's overall strength to decline seriously.

Currently, Verona's youth team coach Bocetti is temporarily in charge of Cioffi, leading the team to host defending champions AC Milan on Sunday.
