VfB Stuttgart sacked Pellegrino Matarazzo following winless start to the season..

Stuttgart announced on its official website on Monday that coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has been sacked immediately.

According to an official statement from Stuttgart, while the club has yet to confirm a successor, they are currently working to find a new manager. During this period, assistant coach Michael Wimmer is expected to take over as head coach on an interim basis.

After the news of his dismissal was confirmed, Matarazzo, who posted on Stuttgart's official website for the last time, said: "My journey together with you in Stuttgart has come to an end. I have achieved a tense but beautiful journey here. Over the years I have also had so many incredible moments and memories that I will cherish forever. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a coach here so that I can establish myself in my coaching career. I have always loved coming to work here and enjoy working with so many great people. Stuttgart is a special club and you can only understand that feeling when you are a part of it. No matter whoever becomes the new manager of Stuttgart,  it is with optimism that I wish this team and this club with extraordinary fans the best of luck and the greatest success."

In addition, the club's Sporting Director Sven Mislintat also added: "When we brought Rino to Stuttgart almost three years ago, we absolutely believed in his potential and his skills as a coach. Rino not only fulfilled but he had even exceeded our expectations in many ways. We never questioned him, even in difficult situations, because we were sure that with him, we had what was best coach for us and our goals. After an in-depth analysis of last season, as we all know, we survived from relegation at the last minute and we start the new season with high expectations. However, results so far has not been able to live up to those expectations as expected."

"We have now reached a point where we believe that parting ways with Rino are inevitable. I deeply regretted to have taken this step and would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Rino for his great contribution for Stuttgart in the past."

Either draw or lose

Since the start of this season, Stuttgart has only managed to get 5 draws and 4 losses in the past 9 matchdays in the league, without winning once, and accumulated only 5 points, placing 17th in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga table.

The 44-year-old Matarazzo succeeded Tim Walter as Stuttgart's head coach in December 2019. During this period, he led the Die Roten to promotion from the second division back to the Bundesliga as a runner-up.

A 0-1 loss to league leaders Union Berlin last week which saw them go on a 3-game losing streak in the league eventually became the last fatal straw that crushed Matarazzo, whose contract was originally scheduled to expire in the summer of 2024.
