Winning La Liga vital to Barca's long-term project - Xavi

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said it was a " wonderful feeling " as he won his first La Liga title as club manager, winning eight titles as a player, ending the season. The Catalan giants had a four-year championship drought.

Xavi's side were crowned champions on Sunday after two first-half goals from Robert Lewandowski gave them a 4-2 win over city rivals Espanyol.

Barcelona were last Spanish champions in 2018-19, when they had club superstars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez spearheading the attack.

However, with the club in deep financial trouble, the pair had to leave and the team's fortunes took a downturn.

However, Xavi, who steered them back to the top less than two years after returning to the club to succeed Ronald Koeman in November 2021 , says winning titles is crucial to their future.

" We're left with a sense of magnificence for more than 10 months of work and sacrifice. It's been a phenomenal job, " Harvey told Movistar Plus .

" For the fans, for the club, winning games is vital for the stability of the project and we have to continue on this path.

" This league means we are doing well and it gives us stability even though we have unfinished business in European competitions. "

excellent grades

Barcelona have failed to make it past the last 16 of the Champions League in the past three seasons .

After the club won four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga titles from 2005-19 , Barcelona have only reached the semi-finals of Europe's elite clubs once since winning the title in 2014-15 .

This season, however, they have enjoyed a stellar domestic run, beating bitter rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and winning La Liga with four games remaining.

Harvey said he felt the pressure and was happy to have the support of his family.

Harvey said: " I think about my wife, my parents, my brothers and sisters ... the staff who have suffered a lot, the people who have never failed. "

" We are in Spain, criticism is normal here, it happened to me when I was a player, but I am very stubborn and in the end it pays off when there are good jobs. "
