WOLVERHAMPTON - Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of Portugal international midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP in club-record fee.

Nunes has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Molineux, with an option for an additional year.

Wolves reportedly paid an initial £38million (€45m), with add-ons which could potentially reach £42.2m (€50m) to the Primeira Liga giants.

The 23-year-old becomes Wolves’ third signing this summer following the acquisition of Nathan Collins and Goncalo Guedes.

Son of a family who runs a bakery shop, Nunes began his footballing education at Ericeirense, a non-league club in Lisbon

He moved to second division side Estoril in 2018 and mainly play for its reserve team.

While representing Estorill in the club’s Taça da Liga clash against Sporting CP in the 2018/19 season, Nunes was so impressed that latter’s scouting team decided to have him signed up in the 2019 winter transfer window.

Nunes made his name again during Sporting’s Champions League campaign in the 2021/22 season, during which his performances was even praised by Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola despite the Portugese side’s heavy loss when both teams met in the round-of-16 tie.

A versatile player who could playing in any central role in midfield, Brazil-born Nunes elected to play for his adopted nation and has since made 8 appearances for Portugal, going on to score his first international goal in a Qatar World Cup qualifier against Turkey in March 2022.
